On October 25, 2025, numerous individuals and families from various parts of Luzon gathered at SM City Marikina to commemorate World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day 2025 under the global theme, “Acceleration Action for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.” This event evolved into more than just a celebration, it became a heartfelt gathering of hope, courage, advocacy, and unity for the entire Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus community.
As participants arrived at the venue, the atmosphere was already filled with excitement, warmth, and anticipation. Families traveled from different cities and provinces, bringing with them stories of resilience, love, and determination. For many parents, children, and youths, the event offered a rare and meaningful opportunity to connect with others who truly understand their journey. The smiles, conversations, laughter, and warm embraces shared throughout the day fostered a strong sense of belonging, reminding everyone that they are never alone in their experiences.
The celebration officially opened with warm welcome remarks from Ms. Naelah V. Tulayba, Assistant Mall Manager of SM City Marikina, who welcomed the participants and expressed support for the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus community. Her message highlighted the importance of inclusion, awareness, and creating safe spaces where every individual and family feels valued, accepted, and empowered.
The event brought together individuals with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, parents, healthcare professionals, advocates, volunteers, students, and supporters, all united in their mission to further accelerate action towards improved healthcare access, stronger support systems, greater awareness, inclusion, accessibility, and opportunities for every individual affected by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
A particularly touching and inspiring highlight of the celebration was the showcase of the incredible talents of our Spina Bifida warriors. Through singing, dancing, performances, presentations, and active participation in various activities, the children and youths confidently shared their talents and abilities with pride and joy. Their courage, determination, and bright smiles touched the hearts of everyone present.

Each performance served as a powerful reminder that children and youths with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus are full of potential, dreams, creativity, and strength. They are defined not by their condition, but by their ability to rise above challenges and inspire others through their resilience and positive spirit.
Parents and families also shared moments of connection and encouragement with one another. Many exchanged stories of challenges, victories, sacrifices, and unconditional love. For some families, simply seeing their children confidently participate and enjoy the celebration freely became one of the most emotional and memorable moments of the day. The event created a safe and welcoming environment where every family felt seen, heard, accepted, and empowered.
The celebration was further enriched by the support of the Department of Health, represented by OIC-Assistant Regional Director Dr. Karen B. Fernandez. Her presence and support underscored the importance of collaboration in strengthening awareness, prevention, healthcare services, and inclusive programs for individuals and families affected by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Her message provided hope and encouragement to the community, especially to parents and advocates who tirelessly work to create better opportunities and a brighter future for their children.
The organizers also extend their heartfelt gratitude to SM Cares and SM City Marikina for graciously opening their doors and helping make this meaningful celebration possible. Through their generosity, partnership, and commitment to inclusivity, hundreds of families and participants were able to gather in a safe, accessible, and welcoming space where everyone felt valued and celebrated. Their support played a crucial role in making the event successful and memorable for the entire community.
Special thanks are also extended to the Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health – Folic Acid PH for enhancing the celebration through their dedication, volunteerism, and ongoing advocacy on folic acid awareness and the prevention of Neural Tube Defects. Their active participation highlighted the importance of empowering young advocates to join the movement towards prevention, education, and awareness. Their passion and commitment inspired many participants, especially the youth, to continue using their voices to effect positive change in the community.
Throughout the event, the message of “Acceleration Action for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus” resonated strongly in every activity, performance, conversation, and shared story. The celebration reminded everyone that awareness alone is insufficient. There is a continuing need for stronger action, better healthcare support, inclusive education, accessible environments, early intervention, rehabilitation services, and greater opportunities for individuals living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
More importantly, the celebration underscored the strength of community. It demonstrated that when families, healthcare professionals, organizations, youth leaders, volunteers, and supporters unite with compassion and a shared purpose, meaningful change becomes possible. The event highlighted not only the challenges faced by individuals with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus but also their talents, abilities, dreams, and limitless potential.
As the day concluded, participants left SM City Marikina with hearts full of gratitude, inspiration, hope, and renewed strength. The memories created, friendships formed, and stories shared during the celebration will continue to inspire the community long after the event ended.
World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day 2025 at SM City Marikina became a powerful celebration of love, resilience, empowerment, and unity—a reminder that together, we can continue to accelerate action, break barriers, strengthen advocacy, and create a future where every person with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus is included, supported, empowered, and given every opportunity to shine.
