The advocacy for Mandatory Folic Acid Fortification in the Philippines continues to gain momentum through the growing support of the Department of Health (DOH), healthcare professionals, advocates, and public health stakeholders united in the mission to prevent Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) and promote healthier beginnings for Filipino children.

In November 2025, members of the Spina Bifida Support Group Foundation, Inc., through the Folic Acid for All PH campaign, were given the opportunity to discuss the prevalence and impact of Neural Tube Defects in the country with then Assistant Secretary Gloria J. Balboa, who now serves as one of the Undersecretaries of the Department of Health. The dialogue became an important platform for advocates to share the realities faced by families affected by NTDs and to emphasize the urgent need for stronger preventive public health measures.

The advocacy has been further strengthened through the support and leadership of DOH Secretary Dr. Teodoro “Ted” J. Herbosa and Undersecretary Dr. Gloria Balboa, whose commitment to maternal and child health has helped advance conversations surrounding folic acid fortification and birth defect prevention. Their support continues to encourage collaboration among health leaders, organizations, and advocates working toward a common public health goal.

During the discussion, advocates highlighted the importance of Mandatory Folic Acid Fortification as a proven and cost-effective strategy in reducing cases of Spina Bifida, Anencephaly, and other Neural Tube Defects. Many countries that have implemented mandatory folic acid fortification have reported significant declines in NTD prevalence, demonstrating the life-changing impact of this intervention.

Advocates also emphasized the importance of improving access to folic acid for women of reproductive age, particularly during the critical preconception period when adequate folic acid intake plays a vital role in fetal development. Through the fortification of staple food products, Mandatory Folic Acid Fortification can help ensure that more women receive this essential nutrient regardless of socioeconomic background.

This meaningful dialogue marked another important step toward advancing policy support for Mandatory Folic Acid Fortification in the Philippines. More than a policy discussion, it reflects the growing collective commitment to protecting maternal and child health and creating a future where preventable Neural Tube Defects can be significantly reduced for generations to come.
